Summary

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) offers incentives for building owners and managers to install advanced sub-meters and ENERGY STAR refrigerators and in-unit lighting for master-metered multifamily buildings.  

The program is designed to provide information about energy usage for each residences at a multi-residential buildings. Residences living in multi-residential buildings that are not sub-metered do not have information about their energy usage. Installation of the submeters will create awareness of their energy use and help increase energy efficiency in multi-residential buildings.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the incentive, the property must be located within an investor owned utility jurisdiction that pays Systems Benefit Charge (SBC). The lists of utilities include Central Hudson, Con Edison, PSEG-Long Island, National Grid, New York State Electric and Gas, Orange and Rockland, or Rochester Gas and Electric.

The property must have at least five units to be considered a multifamily building. The building should exist as master-metered and should not already contain mechanical system to install sub-meters in the residential units.

Program Description

To apply for the incentive, building owner must submit completed application packet to NYSERDA. NYSERDA will schedule a site visit and approve the application, if the building is eligible. NYSERDA will pay the owner after the installation is completed and verified. List of eligible meters is available in the program website.

If the multifamily building also includes refrigerators that are more than 10 years old then NYSERDA will offer $250 per refrigerator to the building owner to replace it will ENERGY STAR refrigerators. The program also offers $25 per fixture to replace old lighting with ENERGY STAR in-unit lighting fixtures. The incentives for the appliances can only be received in combination with sub-metering incentive.
