The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) offeres grants for mid-sized photovoltaic (PV) systems, solar water heating systems (SWH) and Geothermal Heating & Cooling (GHC) installed by businesses, non-profits, and local governments. Funding is available on first-come, first-serve basis and is subject to change based on funding availability.
Program Description
The incentive amounts for each technology depends on the capacity of system. The program are classified into either Small or Large Commercial grants, with incentives amounts below
Small Commercial Clean Energy Grant Incentives |
||
Resource Conversion Technology |
Installed Capacity Range |
Award/Capacity Unit |
Solar Photovoltaics (PV) |
1-99.99 kW |
$60/kW |
Solar Water Heating (SWH) |
50-249.99 sq. ft. |
$20/sq. ft. |
Geothermal Heating & Cooling (GHC) |
1-24.99 tons |
$180/ton |
Large Commercial Clean Energy Grant Incentives |
||
Resource Conversion Technology |
Installed Capacity Range |
Award/Capacity Unit |
Solar Photovoltaics (PV) |
100-200 kW |
$30/kW |
Solar Water Heating (SWH) |
250-1,200 sq. ft. |
$10/sq. ft. (with total award capped at $5,000/project) |
Geothermal Heating & Cooling (GHC) |
25-50 tons |
$90/ton |
It is important to note that these system size/capacity ranges are exclusive, not additive in nature. For example, a 150 kW PV system would be eligible for an incentive of $4,500 (150 kW X $30/kW), not $60/kW for the first 100 kW plus $30/kW for the additional 50 kW. Multiple projects on contiguous properties are considered a single project and projects may not receive more than one grant.
All systems and components must be new and comply with standard equipment, installation, and warranty requirements intended to make sure that installations operate safely and effectively. The MEA notes that the Maryland Office of the Comptroller has determined that the solar incentives offered under this program are taxable for federal income tax purposes and state income tax purposes (a 2012 change). Please visit the program web site for further information on applications, qualification requirements, and more detailed information on the terms and conditions. Incentives for small wind projects are available under Windswept Grant Program.
