October 22, 2019, over 230 mayors nationwide signed a letter to Congress, urging the passages of HR3961 and S2289, which is going to extend the ITC by 5 years.
The Mayor's span from to the continental United States, including large cities such as Philadelphia PA, and smaller cities like Barnstable, MA. 28 of the cities whose mayors signed the letter have 100% sources of renewable energy commitments.
Houston, Texas gets 92% of its energy from solar energy, which is more than other states. Houston’s Mayor, Sylvester Turner, wrote in the letter;
“As the nation’s largest municipal user of renewable energy, Houston understands that sustainability and resiliency go hand in hand. Continuing to support the growth of renewable energy will help the U.S. lead the energy transition, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and build smarter, more resilient communities.”
One reason that this specific action is so important, other than being the largest showing of non-industry support, is the mayors that have signed this letter represent all sides of the political spectrum.
The mayors from the countries three largest cities are absent from the letter: Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, Bill de Blasio from New York City and Lori Lightfoot from Chicago.
