The Lakers’ UCLA Health Training Center is now headquarters to 456 solar panels that are set to generate an estimated 245,000 kilowatt hours per year, sufficient to power 35 homes. That's many homes, and that's a whole lot of energy being created by one of the best teams in the NBA.
Basketball Is A Sport
But, for one moment, let's just talk about the Lakers. In fact, just basketball itself. I think there need to be some major changes in basketball. For one, they should make it more like hockey, I enjoy the collisions. I also think that it's too easy to score. It makes the game somewhat boring in my opinion. My position here, in a sort of off-handed way, is that while the rules of basketball developed over time, the elevation of the hoop was never adjusted accordingly. And now we’re dropped with a game where competitors are able to score apparently at will. Consequently, there is no honor in scoring and thus we are not excited nor surprised when scoring occurs. It would be exciting for, say, a Smurf to score a slam-dunk, but most of the chaps in the NBA are over six-and-half-feet tall with a leap like a rabbit.
The 375-watt solar panels were produced by LG Solar and were installed by Vaha Energy, LG Electronics USA said in a report Monday. The move is suspected of saving the Lakers around $38,000 each year.
They Were Thrilled For Solar
“We are thrilled with the addition of our new LG Solar panels,” Joseph McCormack, chief economic officer and senior vice president of finance at the Lakers, announced in a statement. “One of our goals as an organization is to be at the forefront of energy efficiency, and these panels further our commitment to sustainability.”
The Lakers are the newest major U.S. sports team to welcome renewable energy. In January, for example, Major League Baseball’s San Diego Padres declared that their ground, Petco Park, would be the home base to a 336,520-watt solar power system. This is the best news in basketball. Now, if they would just raise the hoops by a couple feet, we would be in business here. I also would want to make some other recommendations. They should have some water tanks that the players could fall in containing a Japanese spider crab, Frilled sharks, Deep-sea dragonfish, Vampire squid, Terrible-claw lobster, Atlantic wolffish, Fangtooth fish, and the Giant Isopod. They also should have a giant cage that opens every 10 minutes onto the floor containing: a bear, a wolf, a tiger, a sasquatch, a robot with lasers, an actual vampire, Gilbert Godfrey, A burning tire, a bowling ball covered in habanero pepper sauce, and a golf cart with 10 skunks on board.
