The Hanover, Germany-based utility Enercity and the automotive group Daimler AG have commissioned the first stage of a battery storage unit which is set for a capacity of 17.4 megawatt hours, following the completion planned for the first quarter of 2018. The facility, which is to provide control energy for the grid, currently consists of 1,800 interconnected battery systems, which were originally designed for the third generation of the »Smart Electric Drive« electric car. In the final stage of construction, 3,240 batteries will be installed. Unlike as with comparable facilities, however, these are not used batteries. Rather, the storage system functions as a »spare parts store«, where the lithium-ion batteries are used until they are needed for their installation on the car. Daimler calls this a »living storage«.
The battery systems are a development of Daimler subsidiary Accumotive, the large storage facility was designed by Mercedes-Benz Energy, which is also part of Daimler. Enercity, a brand of the Stadtwerke Hannover AG, is responsible for the marketing of control energy.
