Jamaican utility company Jamaica Public Service (JPS) has signed off on a power purchase agreement with renewable energy developer Eight Rivers Energy for a 37MW PV project.
Eight Rivers Energy will be responsible for constructing the solar project, with construction duties set to begin in Paradise Park, Jamaica. As part of this PPA, JPS will be purchasing electricity from the new solar facility for the next 20 years.
The new PV project will be developed over 80 hectares of land — with construction slated to wrap up by mid-2018. The construction phase of the project is expected to create between 200 and 300 jobs during its peak.
This stands as the second PPA that has been signed between JPS and a PV project development company in two years, as JPS signed a PPA with WRB Enterprises, through Content Solar, on a 20MW installation in Clarendon.
The tender for the project was originally announced back in 2012, while Eight Rivers Energy will own and operate the site once it is completed.
