A new rooftop PV system will help to lower the airport´s carbon footprint. Finavia plans to reduce the emissions on all of the company’s 21 airports to zero by 2020. The Helsinki airport will meet this goal by this year, expects the Finnish company.
Finnish airport service company, Finavia, has decided to boost its climate programme and invest in a solar power plant to be located on the rooftop of Helsinki airport’s terminal 2. The PV system is expected to start power generation from late this summer, as the airport operator announced on Wednesday. The entire system, planned to be completed in 2019, will be the largest airport solar power plant in the Nordic countries with a total output of more than 500 kWp. This is equivalent to almost 10% of the airport’s power consumption.
The European airport companies have committed to reach 100 carbon-neutral airports in Europe by 2030. Finavia, which is a key party to this commitment, aims at reducing its carbon footprint on all of the company’s 21 airports to zero by 2020. To do so, the finnish airport operator plans to employ geothermal heat, wind power, LED lights and bio energy at its airports to meet the target.
With the new solar arrays and the use of biofuel for all ground vehicles, Finavia expects to reach those goals at Helsinki airport already by the end of this year.
