France installed a total of 233 MW solar systems in the first half of 2017, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Ecology (Ministère de la Transition Écologique et Solidaire), a decrease of 32 percent compared to H1 2016 (343 MW). In 2016, the country had installed approximately 560 MW of solar capacity.

Regarding the second quarters, new installed capacity grew by 74 percent to 148 MW in Q2 2017 compared to Q1 2017 (85 MW). Total solar installations at the end of June 2017 reached 7,399 MW. More than 7 GW were installed in the French mainland, while the rest of the installations (386 MW) are spread across overseas territories.

Of the total of 391,571 systems installed in France, projects larger than 250 kW account for majority of the installations with 51 percent, while projects ranging from 36 kW to 250 kW account for 27 percent. Projects with capacity less than 36 kW make approximately 22 percent of the installations.

Solar power generated in H1 of 2017 accounted for 4.2 TWh, up by 10 percent year over year. As of June 2017, solar covers at least 1.7 percent of the total national electricity demand. France targets to increase the installed solar capacity to 10,200 MW at the end of 2018, and to 20,200 MW by 2023.
