India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) currently has 433 MW of solar PV power plant projects under implementation, which are expected to be completed in Q4 of 2017 or Q1 of 2018.

The projects are based in three different states: 50 MW at Anantpur in Andhra Pradesh; 260 MW at Bhadla in Rajasthan, and 133 MW at Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh.

In NTPC’s endeavor to reach the milestone of 1,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by the end of 2017, the corporation has already commissioned 845 MW solar PV projects. Therefore, commissioning half of its projects by 2017 will achieve this bold renewable resources target.

According to an IIFL report, NTPC has recently commissioned a 250 MW solar PV power plant in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh. The project was delayed due to evacuation constraints of 25 MW plant pertaining to the solar park developer Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited. The project, valued at $235 million, was assisted by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), and consists of five individual power plants of 50 MW each.

NTPC is India’s largest power utility company with an installed capacity of 51,676 MW, comprising 11 solar PV projects with a cumulative capacity of 870 MW, which represents 1.7% of NTPC’s entire power fleet. The share of solar in the mix is, however, expected to increase in the near future.
