The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) announced the beginning of the construction of a 10 MW PV plant located in the governorate of Tozeur, South Tunisia. According to the news agency »TAP«, the facility will be connected to the grid in May 2018. It is the first of its kind to be carried out by STEG. »It is a project financed by the German Bank, with a loan of 26 million dinars, repayable over 12 years, with 4 years of grace,«, says the agency, citing STEG CEO Moncef Harrabi. A second tranche of a production capacity of 10 MW is planned as part of the Tunisian solar plan, which targets to increasing the rate of production of electricity from renewable energies to 30 percent and to generate up to 1,000 MW of solar energy by 2020.

During the last decade solar energy production in Tunisia is not exceeding 35 MW, mainly from solar rooftop systems.
