Renewable energy goes mainstream

Renewable energy is a success story through extensive research and studies to continue to inspire the new way. According to a joint study by German-based Energy Watch Group and the Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland, transitioning to 100 percent renewable electricity is doable every hour throughout the year. It’s also  more economical  than existing fossil and nuclear energy.

Renewable energy makes the world go round

U.S. states such as California and Massachusetts, consistently break  their own renewable energy records. Areas that were once doubted to receive solar energy, like Nevada and Florida, have exploded into the market. Commercial solar is sweeping the U.S. with success that large-scale industrial solar gardens are now under construction. The gardens on the California Nevada border generate so much power, it  hugely impacts the wholesale electricity price in those states. On a global scale, many countries are receptive to receiving renewable energy. Costa Rica ran 300 days on electricity generated from renewable energy alone just last year. Norway and Iceland get most of their power from renewables. China added around 54 gigawatts (GW) of solar PV capacity in 2017. Bringing their total amount to 120 GW PV capacity. China installed three times more than any other country in the world. The Indian government announced plans to surpass 200 GW of renewable generation by 2022. In addition, financial experts note that by 2020 renewables will have become the cheapest form of power generation.

Global renewable energy power system is in progress

A global power system based on renewable energy is a tangible reality. This study by the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and the Energy Watch Group (EWG) refutes this argument. The results prove that existing solar, wind, hydropower, and battery storage technologies generate enough power to easily power the whole world. They predict that by 2050, renewables will account for 94 percent of all electricity generation. If political conditions are favorable, it can happen faster than that. By 2050, due to falling prices, solar panels and battery storage dominate most of the electricity generated worldwide. Solar power generation is projected to reach 69 percent of the world’s total output. The study says that global transition to a 100 percent renewable electricity system will create 36 million jobs by 2050. This number is nearly double the 19 million people employed worldwide in renewable energy in 2015. The study notes that there’s no reason to invest in fossil fuel or nuclear power production and the transition is no longer a question of technical or economic viability, but of political will. It’s now the turn of politicians, businesses and civil society to pursue actions to help the global transition to renewable energy to be much easier. Governments must adopt national legislative acts that permits  the use of private investment in renewable energy and storage technologies. Although public financing is available, private investment is crucial to initiate competition and swift scaling-up of the renewable energy sector.
