An incentive program was launched for existing homes on June 1, Sacramento’s electric utility offers rebates marketing electrification in both old and new homes.
The California solar rebates program for new solar-powered homes started last year. 700 pieces are in the pipeline underneath the agenda, stated by Owen Howlett, the project manager of energy strategy research and development at SMUD.
SMUD is not managed by the California Public Utilities Commission and is, therefore, free from the policy restrictions forbidding the state’s large investor-owned utilities from persuading their customers to fuel-switch from natural gas to solar-powered homes.
SMUD, which assists more than 1.5 million consumers in Sacramento, is the United States 6th community-owned electric utility.
In the Sacramento area, it just became easier for homeowners to buy or convert to solar-powered homes.
SMUD calculated that a family in an aged 2,700-square-foot home manufactured prior to the acceptance of California’s building energy efficiency policies should save $280 yearly by switching from a natural gas furnace to an electric heat pump for space heating. A family in a 1,500-square-foot home that is high efficiency, built after 2001 would save $102 annually under the same gas-to-electricity conversion.
The typical retail ratio of electricity for SMUD’s residential customers is 13.8 cents per kilowatt-hour, marginally bigger than the national average (12.89 cents/kWh) but smaller than the California average (16.08 cents/kWh), with facts provided to the latest EIA data.
So SMUD continued the examination but utilized a 20 % electricity rate that was higher than before. Savings decreased by about 1/2, however, consumers still came out earlier on yearly functioning costs for space heating that was stated by Howlett.
SMUD offers rebates on solar panels for homes in view of the fact that awareness of science like heat-pump water heaters among homeowners, and even among plumbers and other building professionals, is very small.
Driving costs down for economies will come with experience. In the meantime, SMUD’s gas-to-electric conversion rebate on solar panels are phenomenal.
Converting to solar-powered homes
For SMUD, the readiness of solar electricity technologies will convey there’s absolutely no reason to create the latest gas infrastructure.
