The Pros and Cons of Your Company Going Solar
When it comes to going solar, businesses and residential homes have different variables they have to take into consideration. You might be wondering if your business should take up the solar mantle, but all you can find is resources about how to go solar in your home, and you’re uncertain if you should bring solar into your business. Keep reading this blog to learn all the pros and cons of going solar when it comes to a business, and find out if the investment is worth the price of the initial installation.
Pro #1: The return on investment.
You’re probably looking at the initial cost and hesitating, but the return on investment can be paid off in as little as seven years. If you’re running a business, the savings in the long term will be a huge benefit to you. Investing in something that will mean you’ll pay less on utilities in the future is always a worthwhile investment.
Pro #2: You have a choice on solar panels.
You might not realize it, but you actually have a choice on which solar panels you can get. If you have an older building that uses a lot of solar, you can go for ground-mounted solar panels. They cost more, but they’re more durable, more efficient, and can be installed anywhere. This is especially helpful if you rent your building.
Pro #3: You don’t have to pay for this alone.
If you’re running a small business, you may be thinking, “It’s just not financially possible.” But don’t give up hope yet - there’s help for you. Not only are there tax credits and rebates in general, but there are also small business loans in place just for helping businesses. There are also loans and leasing from solar companies to help you go solar even if you can’t pay for it all at once.
Con #1: It’s expensive.
Of course, we’re not going to lie to you and say it won’t still be expensive. Especially when you’re installing solar for a business, which could cost you anywhere from $130,000 to $200,000. If you have a small business, even with all the help available to you, solar still might just not be financially feasible. If you’re still reading this, you’re probably still hoping you can go solar somehow, and you certainly can. For example, you don’t necessarily need to go 100% renewable all at once to start using solar and saving right now. You could just get one panel for some of your energy needs and start saving, and then add on more panels over time until you eventually reach your 100% renewable energy goal.
Con #2: Your location might not be ideal.
Another con might be if your location isn’t very ideal. This could be anything from your roof not having any south-facing directions to a lot of shady trees in your area. If you find yourself in these situations, there’s usually a solution for them. For instance, if your roof isn’t tilted in any ideal direction, you could still install it in a different direction, it just won’t be quite as efficient. Or you could install a ground mounted panel. If you have a lot of trees, you could just start trimming them regularly.
