A solar generator is essentially an all-in-one power generator that has all the parts needed to get solar energy. However, many people view them as a gimmick. After all, having such a small system able to do what rooftop solar does (though, obviously, on a much smaller scale) seems too good to be true. In this blog, we’ll analyze what exactly a solar generator is and if it’s a worthwhile investment for people to get, or if it’s something that should be avoided all together.
What a solar generator really is.
As stated above, a solar generator is typically an all in one system that includes panels, a battery charger, solar batteries, and an inverter. All of these components will come with your rooftop solar, as well.
The battery charger will convert the electricity it gets into voltage and regulate the flow of power to its battery bank in order to store the energy you produce.
The inverter will convert the DC energy that is produced by the sun into your panels into AC power that can be used in your household. It can also step up the voltage it generates.
Why people get solar generators.
Usually when people decide to get solar generators, they get portable ones. That seems to be the main reason a person would want one - to take it on the go. For people who take long camping trips that happen multiple times a year or people who hang out on a boat for hours at a time, investing in a portable solar generator might make sense for them.
What solar generators can actually power up.
So you might be thinking a solar generator is a tiny solar system and how much it can actually power up in your home. Well, it’s not going to do a whole lot. Small things like phones, fridges, and televisions will be able to get powered up, but not a whole lot else, and it might not run for very long. Again, the point of these systems seems to be for portable use.
How a solar system could be portable.
The term “portable” is somewhat strange. It’s not like a solar phone charger than you can just carry in your pocket. However, you can hook it up to your RV or your boat. In other words, you could apply this small system to your boat and keep a fridge charged up for your traveling.
What are the pros and cons of a solar generator?
A solar generator is going to be great for small electrical requirements on the go. However, they’re going to charge things slowly and won’t be able to charge a whole lot. Compared to fuel-powered generator, they’re very expensive, and the return on investment isn’t going to be much of a deal, unlike a normal solar system.
So, should you invest in a solar generator?
When all is said and done, a solar generator just doesn’t seem like much of a deal. Instead of investing a bunch of your money into something that doesn’t have a ton of advantages, you’re better off just getting a normal solar system for your home or boat. If you just want to power something small like a phone or laptop, solar chargers and backpacks also exist, eliminating the need to spend a bunch of money on small electronics.
