Should You Install Tesla Roof Tiles?

Tesla’s roof tiles are creating a ton of media buzz. This is because they blend in seamlessly with your home, appearing to be a normal roof. No one will be able to tell that your roof is actually a system of solar panels! However, like every single solar panel system, these also have their drawbacks. This technology is still very new, and it’s also still fairly difficult to obtain them. However, if these are something you’re really interested in, you’ll probably want to ensure you’ve done the appropriate amount of research and know exactly which benefits and drawbacks these panels have. Keep reading this article to learn exactly why Tesla roof tiles might or might not be right for you.

Waiting for the Panels

If you don’t live in California but are totally invested in the idea of getting Tesla roof tiles, the first thing you’ll need to think about is if you can handle the wait. This is because Tesla is currently selling these panels to people in California, and even there, supplies are still quite limited. If you want to hop on board with getting solar right now, you might have to settle for a different kind of solar panel. You should also be thinking about the federal tax credit, which is going to be lowered each year until its expiry in 2022. If you want to get the 30% credit, you only have until December 31st of this year, so Tesla’s solar tiles are probably not the right choice for you.

Tesla Roof Tiles Have an Optimal Aesthetic Design

The main pro to getting these panels is of course their aesthetic design. When they’re installed onto your roof, it will be extremely hard for anyone to tell that you have solar panels. They also come in four different styles, making them even better for someone who cares about the aesthetics of their home. You can get them in the textured, smooth, Tuscan, or slate designs.

Tesla Solar Tiles are Going to Last

Another huge benefit of these panels is that they’re extremely durable and will last a lot longer than a normal roof tile. This is of course important not only for your solar needs, but also because these tiles are going to become your roof. Not only that, but they also come with an infinite warranty that lasts as long as your house does. Usually, warranties only last 25 years, so that is obviously a massive guarantee.

Tesla Solar Tiles are Going to Cost You a Lot More

Not only are these panels very new and in demand, but they also require you to literally replace your entire roof, which is a costly endeavor. And if you aren’t able to get the tax credits and rebates because you have to wait for them, it’s going to cost you even more. As of right now, these panels cost about $25,000 more than traditional panels and only generate 77% as much of the power. However, if you have the money and don’t need as much efficiency to power your home, they still may be the right choice for you.

New Technology Means Unknowns

Another thing to consider is that because these are such a new technology, no one really knows yet how costly repairs are or if the return on investment is worth it. If your roof springs a leak, people still don’t know if it’s going to cost more than a traditional roof and if Tesla will be the only ones able to fix it. Until they’ve been used more, the ROI is still an unknown.
