Factors to Consider Before Installing Solar
Installing solar isn’t exactly an impulsive decision to make. It requires a lot of research and considerations to ensure you get the absolute best solar system possible with the most efficiency and the optimal amount of savings. There are a lot of variables you need to factor in before making your final decision, and in this blog, we’ll go over the most important ones so that you’re prepared for when the time to make your choice comes. Use this blog as a jumping off point and make sure you do the maximum amount of research so you don’t end up with a system you’ll come to regret.
Make sure your roof is in the optimal condition.
Oftentimes, people will install a solar system without even thinking about their roofs. Then, when the roof overcomes the results of natural degradation, they’ll be shocked to find out they have to completely remove their solar systems, and then reinstall them, in order to get the roof fixed. This is why it’s important to make sure your roof is in its optimal condition before you install solar. That’s especially important if you have an asphalt roof because that material will only hold up for about twenty years, which is less than the average lifespan of a solar system. You’ll definitely want to consider completely replacing your roof with a brand new one, especially if you are one of those people with an asphalt roof. Having a roof made of material that will be able to hold up for as long as 40 years is the best way to ensure your roof will last as long as your system.
Where on the earth you’re located.
Another thing you might not have considered is your location on the planet. This is because where you live greatly factors into how much sunlight you’ll actually get each day. If you live up north, for example, you won't’ produce nearly as much as someone who lives in southern California. This does not, however, mean you shouldn’t install solar - everyone should! But it does mean you’ll need to have extra panels to make up for the lack of sunlight.
You’ll also need to factor in the orientation of your roof. If your roof is facing the south, you’re going to generate the most energy. But if it’s facing north, you’ll generate the least. Again, the solution is to get more panels, not to throw out the idea of installing solar completely. You’ll also have to factor in how much shade you have on your roof, which will also decrease efficiency. You might need to trim back some trees or move large objects out of the way.
Choosing the appropriate panel for your needs.
Most people get solar panels, but what they don’t know is that ground panels also exist. These would be a great option if you have a shady roof that’s facing north, as they can be placed anywhere. Unfortunately, they’re also more expensive, but if you have a roof that’s not optimal for solar, this is going to be the choice that actually benefits you the most in the long run.
There are also multiple panel types. Click here to see a full breakdown of all the types of panels you can get so you can figure out which one is right for you.
