Solar Energy Isn’t Just Good for the Planet: It’s Also Good For Your Health!

When people think about the advantages of solar power, two main things come to mind more than anything else: the savings of going solar and how much solar can help save our planet and reverse the effects of climate change. What people often aren’t thinking about, however, is how good solar energy is for your health! While you often might think about how great solar is for the planet, you probably aren’t thinking as much about how that directly ties into the health of the people who live here. Of course, it’s obvious that living here as long as possible is inherently good for our health. But it goes deeper than that, with solar helping us as much as fixing our breathing. Keep reading this blog to learn everything solar is doing to improve human health and learn yet another reason why the switch to solar should be happening right now, not when it’s too late.

The quality of our air directly impacts our health.

When was the last time you stopped to consider the quality of the air that you breathe? When considering going solar, you should also be thinking about how much it will improve the air quality. Installed solar is already lowering annual greenhouse gas emissions by 17 million metric tons. In urban areas, particularly in China and India, the air is so foul, it makes 1970’s era Los Angeles look like the cleanest city on the planet. Studies have also shown that reductions in emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) add up to $167 billion worth of averted health and environmental damages. By reducing the air pollution, the obvious first effect we’ll see is an improvement on the lungs of everyone around us.

Helping the habitats around us helps ourselves.

Another benefit of solar power and fighting global warming is that natural ecosystems are better protected from the onslaughts of fossil fuel production. Climate change has caused plant extinctions across the world, being blamed for 46% of the extinction of 976 species studied. Renewable energy is helping in the case of plants, but solar is especially advantageous because of minimal problems with installation and operation. By helping the habitats around us, we are helping ourselves, as we need ecosystems to thrive in order to keep producing enough food. Plus, bees are a species currently facing endangerment, and if the bees go, we’re goners.

Solar is an aid in human ailments.

There are also studies linking nature to mental and physical health. Being in nature is a form of meditation and tends to promote self-growth and introspection. With the U.S. boasting many areas of natural beauty, it’s common sense to try and preserve as much of our beautiful lands as possible. Not only will we be able to keep more of our beautiful scenery around longer, but this also ties directly into preserving habitats and cleaning up our air.

By going solar, you’re benefiting everyone.

Solar power is a direct response to climate change mostly caused by fossil fuels. The plan is to cut back the use of fossil fuels and give aid to a severely damaged planet, replacing it with renewable fuels. But what does this mean to the average person? The technology behind solar panels is accessible, meaning that solar power can be developed locally rather than requiring big international tech companies for massive large-scale solar operations. This means that local communities gain new skills with renewable energy and can produce a more sustainable area to live in. Last year alone, 250,000 new jobs were created in the solar industry. When people work, they don’t have to worry about starving, meaning you’re helping everyone by putting your money into the solar industry.
