Climate change is here. The premature deaths continue despite the knowledge that burning fossil fuels is causing considerable damage to all life on earth. The dramatic increase in solar installations continues to be a bright spot in an otherwise terrifying energy landscape. News stories proliferate about climate-related weather events that are liable for hundreds of deaths and injuries. But there continues to be good news about solar power, despite tariffs levied on solar panels from China. Solar prices are still holding relatively steady. Even though the president and his "environmental" advisors deny climate change, that doesn’t mean the rest of the world has bought into this propaganda. In fact, solar power is thriving all over the planet and it looks like that trend is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.
Much of the reason solar power has grown so much recently is falling prices of solar prices. The average cost of solar energy in 2015 dropped 70 percent. In 2016, prices fell even further – nearly 20 percent – which helped increase the installations of solar power systems.
“Prices dropped to all-time lows, installations expanded in states across the country and job numbers soared,” Hopper said. “The bottom line is that more people are benefiting from solar now than at any point in the past, and while the market is changing, the broader trend over the next five years is going in one direction – and that’s up.”
Solar power’s popularity has not even reached its peak yet. In the next five years, experts predict the U.S. solar market will triple in size.
“In some parts of the country, solar has become the most affordable option, providing it with an economically-winning hand and earning it the support of politicians on both sides of the aisle,” explained Hobson. “It is not a partisan issue and we do not see that changing as forecasts show solar’s widespread growth continuing.”
The solar industry is employing approximately 260,000 Americans in well-paying jobs from coast to coast. Many states have reaped the benefits of solar power already. California’s shift to solar power shows how successful renewable energy is, helping the economy and creating more jobs. Solar energy also improves the economy in other ways. The American solar energy sector is generating more than $23 billion in direct investment and dramatically decreasing air pollution. Other states that we wouldn’t normally associate with renewable energy, such as Georgia, Minnesota, South Carolina, and Utah, saw unprecedented growth in solar PV installations in 2016. Although only nine states have one GW of operating solar PV today, by 2022 that number will increase to 24 states.
Do your part by installing a solar energy system! Who wouldn't want to generate their own power? There's a feeling of accomplishment knowing you are producing your own electricity without contributing to the further warming of the planet. But solar is also an outstanding investment that pays off whether you keep your home or business or sell it. Continued low prices for solar panels are making solar an affordable option for increasing numbers of energy-conscious individuals and companies. Imagine being independent of the power outages and transmission problems of the electrical grid. In some cases, if you generate surplus energy, you can sell it back to the utility.
