Pollution is one of the biggest problems for people all over the globe. Air pollution in cities is killing thousands of people prematurely and for some, there's no end in sight. Fortunately for the planet’s health, solar technologies are making fossil fuels gradually extinct. “Dirty” energy sources are destined to be exhausted in the near future. Fossil fuels do not qualify as renewable energy resources because their supply is nearly depleted. In fact, fossil fuels are projected to be completely gone within 50 years. In addition, the formation of fossil fuels takes many years, which means when they are gone, we may have to wait for another half century for new fossil fuels to form. Will we learn how to use these fuels without polluting the earth? Not bloody likely...
Environmental pollution is one of the major downsides of fossil fuels. It is a well-known fact that carbon dioxide, gas is released when fossil fuels are burned. This has resulted in warmer air and water. The rise in temperature of the earth has resulted in melting of polar ice caps, flooding of low lying stretches and rise in sea levels. If these conditions continue, our planet will face even more serious consequences in the near future.
Accidents involving fossil fuels are extremely dangerous and can cause massive damage to the earth's ecosystems. Oil spills have occurred in the past, especially in the United States and off its coasts. Oil spills cause massive pollution of water bodies and death of aquatic animals including those living offshore. To make matters worse, the environment around the shore is severely ravaged. The truth is, emissions of greenhouse gases and other toxic elements can cause serious health complications such as chronic asthma, chronic bronchitis, and cardiovascular diseases. Climate scientists believe that their initial projections were much too rosy. Due to methane emanations that are much more than expected, as well as continued combustion of fossil fuels, the researchers believe our planet is warming much faster than previously thought. Weather patterns are being affected by the rapid sea ice melt and air pollution is exacerbating the problem. Scientists warn that we must ditch the fossil fuels as soon as possible or face even more volatile climate-related problems.
Fossil fuels continue to be very vulnerable to price fluctuations and market manipulation. This aspect of the energy market is greatly felt by developing countries that rely heavily on the importation of fossil fuels. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, large price variations and price manipulations by oil-producing countries in the middle east cost the economy about $1.9 trillion between 2004 and 2008 alone. Progress in renewable energy technologies has minimized these price fluctuations and manipulations to some degree. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, more than half of the oil consumed in the United States is imported. This overdependence on foreign oil can be a security menace to the United States. Nations can use this over-reliance as political leverage, putting the country’s interests in danger.
Coal power plants require a considerable supply of coal to generate a large amount of energy on a consistent basis. This means that these plants require train-loads of fuel near power stations to carry out the process of generating power. This is still needed as many countries are still dependent on coal as a major source for producing "juice".
