Many people hear misconceptions when it comes to buying products from China, and solar panels are no exception. In this blog, we’ll look at why you should judge a product by the manufacturer, not by the country.
Myth 1: They’re Lower Quality
This is the most common myth that gets spread about not just Chinese solar panels, but about all Chinese products in general. And like most other products that you’ll find in stores in America, China is one of the top producers. Their panels account for over 70% of all panels manufactured worldwide. Because China is edging out the competition when it comes to being a leader in the solar market, it would only make sense that they’d also want their panels to be effective. Not making effective panels would mean they’d lose their unique edge in this market and simply wouldn’t make financial sense.
There actually are several reasons that China’s panels are cheaper, and it has nothing to do with them being lower quality. The first factor is that their inverters are typically indoors, as opposed to the American inverters that are located outdoors. This means their inverters are cheaper due to not having to deal with things like the weather, cleaning, and cooling that the more expensive American inverters have to deal with. Another reason is that it’s cheaper to obtain the materials they need. And the last reason is that the United States has many more testing requirements. This typically falls in line with the idea that America’s products are better quality than China’s, because more rigorous testing is performed, but as we will see, that isn’t a tried and true fact.
Myth 2: They’re Less Efficient
Being less efficient goes hand in hand with being lower quality. Efficiency, however, is the number one thing people look for when they invest in solar. They want to be able to completely replace their traditional power, and that would be impossible without efficient enough panels. People also have to factor in how many panels they’re willing to buy, and a less efficient panel means buying more and spending more.
Chinese panel manufacturers are right behind America when it comes to efficiency, with some of their manufacturers even having more efficient panels than America does. While the top American company has an efficiency of 21%, China is right behind that with all their top manufacturers coming in at around 16%. This just drives home the idea that if you want quality panels, you need to be looking at the company who makes them, not the country of origin.
Myth 3: Only Chinese Solar Companies Use Them
While many people are under the impression that only Chinese solar companies use their solar panels, this couldn’t be the furthest thing from the truth. Right behind China’s companies, the second highest consumer of their products is actually a US solar company. And America isn’t alone, with countries like Germany, Japan, and Korea also invested in these Chinese panels for their solar companies. It appears they know that when it comes to investing in solar, an informed, a well-researched decision is much better than a decision based on assumptions.
The major takeaway here is that no matter where your panels come from, you should be researching who the manufacturer is and how quality their company is, not the country your panels are coming from.
