You may think of solar as a way for rich people to power their homes, and not so much as a life-saving industry. However, solar energy can be used as a way to help people all over the world. Between renewable energy helping people in times of disaster, to the clean air helping save our planet and save lives, to the job creation we always so desperately need, solar energy is the industry doing the best it can for the lives of others, even if it may not be the first thing you think of when you think of a life-saving industry.
Power Outages Stand No Chance
The first way solar energy is helping people is by being a way to keep the lights on during a power outage. While being on-grid means your power will go off with everyone else’s, being off-grid means your battery can continue to power your home regardless. While you might not think about it too much, power outages can, in fact, cause fatalities. When the air conditioning goes off in the middle of summer and you can’t get to your phone heat stroke sets in. Getting trapped inside an elevator and dealing with the stress of being trapped in a small space with multiple other people can bring on a panic attack, which could result in heart failure. More people go to the hospital during outages, meaning they become overcrowded and people pass away as a result. With solar power always running, these unnecessary deaths could be completely avoided.
We Could Reverse the Effects of Climate Change
With fossil fuels destroying our planet and creating a horrifying greenhouse effect every day, something needs to change. Solar energy seems to be the answer. While many think of climate change as something in the future, it’s already killing people right now by bringing on more natural disasters than ever before. Increased wildfires, more vicious hurricanes, and rising sea levels are all causing disaster to befall people everywhere. This also means the price of food is rising, too, and hunger levels are reaching all-time highs. If we can use green energy to combat climate change right now, we can hopefully reverse these impacts.
With 6.4 million people dying each year just because of the pollution in our environment, there’s no reason not to try to reverse the effects of climate change right now. The quicker we do that, the quicker our air will once again become clean and breathable. Breathable air is the key to our survival, and, besides water, oxygen is the most important thing we need to function properly. With the oxygen in our air completely polluted and dirty, it’s no wonder people are dying so frequently as a direct result. You wouldn’t drink bleach, so why are people so willing to ignore the fact that they’re breathing in dangerous chemicals every day?
Solar is Creating Jobs
Another important way solar is helping save lives is by providing people with jobs. In just the past seven years, the solar industry has had an increase of 168% of its workforce. In 2016, 250,000 people were signed onto that same workforce. These jobs are not only helping our economy, but they’re also helping individual people who have been searching for jobs. The more jobs there are to go around, the less poverty that exists, the healthier our population is, and the fewer deaths we’ll see yearly.
