Renewable energy is enjoying a massive wave of success currently and there are a couple of important reasons for it. Not only is the planet warming at an alarming rate, but the fuels we burn now will be gone in a few decades. Solar power is getting momentum like no other time in history. The advent of solar energy comes at an important time in human history. Pollution and climate change are motivating scientists to discover ways for the world to produce power in a non-polluting form. Several years ago, solar was too expensive to be a viable energy solution for most individuals. But now, solar energy is cheaper than traditional fossil fuels and within the reach of many home and business owners. Solar power is a "no-brainer" for most people these days because it "scratches a few itches." First, everyone wants to save money on energy, but many families don't want to burn fossil fuels for their own power. Then, some families and businesses are thrilled when they have solar because they feel empowered producing their own energy. Since solar prices are continuing to fall and incentives are still in place, experts are predicting a rosy future for the solar industry and it's coming not a moment too soon.
Solar and wind power is now cheaper than new fossil fuel capability in more than 30 countries, according to a new report from the World Economic Forum. The influential group has characterized the change as a "tipping point" that could make resisting climate change into a profitable form of business for energy companies. But investors and energy firms are still unwilling to invest much money into these green solutions despite the fact that they are cheaper than more traditional forms of electricity generation.
“Renewable energy has reached a tipping point – it now constitutes the best chance to reverse global warming,” said Michael Drexler, Head of Long Term Investing, Infrastructure and Development at the World Economic Forum. “Solar and wind have just become very competitive, and costs continue to fall. It is not only a commercially viable option but an outright compelling investment opportunity with long-term, stable, inflation-protected returns.”
Just ten years ago, generating electricity through solar cost about $600 per MWh, and it cost only $100 to generate the same amount of power through coal and natural gas. But the price of renewable sources of power plunged quickly – today it only costs around $100 the generate the same amount of electricity through solar and $50 through the wind. The reasonable price of solar and wind energy is already encouraging companies to build more plants to harvest it. The US is adding about 125 solar panels every minute, according to the Solar Energy Industry Association and investment in renewables in 2015 increased to $286 billion, up five percent from the year before.
However, the investment isn't enough to counteract the catastrophic effects of global warming. The worldwide investment is only 25 percent of the $1 trillion goals set in the landmark Paris climate change accord, and because of political difficulties with investments, it can be hard to convince companies to put their cash into green power.
There has never been a better time to install a solar energy system!
