Planning on Making the Switch to Solar? Remember These Four Things

Making the switch to solar energy is now more mainstream than ever, with panels going up everywhere from homes to corporate offices. Still, there are many things people haven’t taken into consideration when deciding to make the switch. Keeping in mind the technology and design of what you’re buying is important when making a switch to solar. While many people know the benefits, they don’t know the full scale of what goes into making the switch. Here are four things you should know.

  1. Know Exactly What Technology You’re Buying

While you may know you want to buy solar panels, you might not have considered the different types that exist, or the additional tech you might want to consider adding. For starters, do your research on the kinds of panel choices that are out there. Buy the perfect panel based on the design of your home, your specific needs, and your budget. For example, there are multiple types of silicon cells that exist in each kind of panel. Panels themselves come in multiple designs to better fit your roof, get more power absorption, and make it more aesthetically pleasing. You’ll need less or more panels depending on what exactly you have in your home and how much energy you use on average. You might also be considering getting some new tech devices. Batteries, for instance, can help you have extra energy in the event of a blackout. You’ll want to research all the high tech options that are out there in order to get the most efficient system you can for your home.

  1. It’s Cheaper for a Reason

Cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean better for you. While it’s tempting to go with the most affordable option, you should also consider the long term. If you want your system to last the normal lifespan of 25 years, you’ll need to invest more into it. While you should make your cost decisions based on what’s in your budget, you should also consider your investment. Would you rather pay more now and have a quality, long-lasting system, or would you rather pay less now and replace it with another system down the road? Really, this choice depends on what’s important to you. If paying for multiple cheaper systems in 25 years is more up your alley than putting a lot of money down at once, then trust your gut.

  1. A Roof is a Window to The House’s Soul

You should consider your roof’s design when deciding on your solar system. Some roofs are simply better suited to receive optimal sunlight than others. While all roofs will see sunlight, one that is surrounded by trees won’t be as energy efficient as one that is in direct sunlight. You’ll also need to consider the angle of the roof and whether the sun will be hitting it in an optimal way.

  1. Get the Low-down on Incentives and Rebates

When setting up your solar, make sure you also know exactly how to get as much money back as possible. Government incentive programs and rebates in your area will increase your return on investment. On top of that, you may be able to get a lower tax rate and your power company may pay you back on any overcharged energy. Make sure you’re getting the most financial advantage you can on going green.
