Solar power and the greenhouse effect

The news reports are becoming more alarming all the time. Catastrophic fires, massive floods, and extreme droughts are becoming regular news events. California is setting new records for wildfires this season and has already used up their 2018 fire budget in September. It is very clear to climate scientists that burning fossil fuels is the main cause of the world’s air and water pollution. Politicians all over the world are considering alternative energy sources that reverse the trend toward pollution of our planet. Renewable energy is a more sustainable way to consume energy that will create a long-term solution when we have exhausted the world’s fossil fuels. The world has been mostly reliant on fossil fuels for energy. We are emitting more than 20 billion tons of carbon into the environment every year. These fossil fuels are becoming consumed rapidly, and demand for energy is increasing, despite the warnings of climate experts. Currently, the construction industry and other industries that rely heavily on fossil fuels are switching to sustainable and renewable resources to become less dependent on these polluting forms of energy, Imagine if all the world’s construction projects utilized solar power!

Europe is still the most progressive in clean energy

In some countries, such as the European Union and the United Kingdom, commitments to transitioning toward renewable energy were made many years ago. The EU countries said in 2007 than 20% of its energy would be renewable energy by 2020, similarly, the UK committed to 15% of energy usage being renewables. The United States, on the other hand, has an administration currently who continue to deny that global warming exists. Can policies supporting fossil fuel and coal production be defeated when the power of the presidency is behind them?  Here are some energy sources that are considered truly “renewable”:

Solar energy is the star of the renewables show

Solar converts sunlight, a naturally renewable and inexhaustible resource, into electricity. Several new solar technologies are being introduced making this form of energy more efficient and less costly than ever before. Even without further technological innovation, solar is already producing more power cheaper and prices continue to fall. Solar is certainly the "feel good" story of renewable energy.

Tidal and wave power

Tidal turbines can generate electricity from the changing of the ocean’s tides. Similarly, electricity can be captured from the ocean’s waves, which are limitless. Scientists are working on improvements that will make this form of energy generation more efficient.

Wind power is already generating power for the grid

Wind can be converted into electricity using wind turbines. However, wind turbines only generate energy 70-85% of the time, so their effectiveness is controversial. There are some who find the towers an “eyesore” but are those people pleased to see nuclear cooling towers, a symbol of man’s idiocy? The windmills also cause many bird deaths every year, but slower moving blades are being introduced to help with that problem.
