Cleaner air through solar power

The news reports are ominous and climate scientists continue to report that global warming's effects are being felt more than ever before. Massive wildfires, floods, droughts, and storms are bashing the earth in previously unheard of ways. Before the dramatic effects of climate change became apparent, solar energy was seen by some as a sort of environmental novelty that the wealthy could use to reduce their carbon footprint. Today, mankind is faced with global warming more dramatic in scale than the most cynical climate scientists ever projected. Now mankind is faced with some karma. We can adopt solar and wind power now or face even more dire consequences very rapidly. For some, it's good news that the planet has only about another fifty years of fossil fuels buried in her. But all that burning of toxic substances has placed us in the dangerous position we are currently in. The solar revolution is clearly upon us despite the climate deniers who are intent upon destroying the climate-related advances put into place by more environmentally responsible politicians.

An analysis by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) determined that large-scale solar adoption would substantially diminish nitrous oxides, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter discharges, all of which can cause a multitude of health problems.

The NREL study also found that, among other health benefits, solar power creates fewer instances of bronchitis, respiratory and cardiovascular problems, and lost work days due to other impacts of dirty air.

Environmental benefits of solar are many

Policymakers need to educate themselves so they understand how solar power benefits the environment. They cannot allow their fossil fuel loving lobbyists to program them into believing gas and coal are innocuous after all we have learned from years of diligent research from climate scientists. The truth is, the sun offers a limitless supply of energy at a time in human history when we must decide how we are going to power the next generations. By installing a solar power system, the average two-person household reduces their carbon emissions by three to four tons yearly.

Because buildings contribute 39% of all carbon emissions in the United States, installing solar lowers these effects. While every home, and business that embraces solar power makes a difference in our pollution levels, the cumulative impact of property owners installing solar is potentially world changing at a time when the world really needs changing.

The financial protection of installing solar can be significant as prices for solar panels continue to fall. Many solar customers generate more electricity from their panels than they can use and sell the excess back to the utility company or share with their neighbors.
