The earth has been under assault by toxic pollutants for many years. Unfortunately, the fossil fuels we use to provide energy, are also causing our air to be dangerous to breathe, especially for the vulnerable young and old citizens of the planet. Countless deaths and illnesses have been the result of mankind’s greed for more energy. That helps make the transition to renewable energy sources more intense than in any time in history. Climate scientists have warned humanity about these man-made weather events and what man needs to do to change the situation. This helps explain why the solar energy revolution is fully upon us.
There are many forms of renewable energy and global warming has intensified the search for clean energy sources. There are several outstanding reasons for switching to renewable energy sources. They are cleaner and less polluting than fossil fuels, such as coal and gas. Since “renewable” means they are replenished resources, the planet has an endless supply available. However, even clean resources can be mismanaged, too, resulting in damage to the earth. The record of lawmakers on this issue outside of California is not a proud one. Some of these energy sources are becoming easier to access through deregulation in some of the more progressive states.
Renewable energy sources
Every kind of energy source has an impact on the environment. These risks often come from overuse and cutting of corners in an effort to meet increased needs. Self-regulation and federal and state regulatory agencies attempt to keep this from happening. However, there is nothing we can do to change the fact that burning fossil fuels cause pollution.
Power generation from wind requires the construction of large towers, which some people oppose because they don’t appreciate the appearance of the windmills. The huge turbines and propeller blades are also noisy. Some people have complained the vibrations from turbines cause headaches. According to National Geographic Green Living, more than 27,000 birds are killed each year by the turbine blades. However, the energy generated at these power stations can be a significant part of a total energy program. Now, slower moving blades are being implemented that are less likely to harm the birds.
Solar panels are usually constructed on existing structures, but new large-scale projects are planned to be built in open areas. This requires land use, which affects habitats and wildlife. The generation of electricity from solar panels is low-risk, but the manufacturing of the solar cells requires the use of various hazardous materials. However, those risks are minimal in comparison to the pollution damage caused by the burning of fossil fuels.
Most geothermal plants are located near geothermally active spots. Others require deep drilling to reach the heated resources. Drilling requires extensive land use and introduces some risk of unsettled earth. Water-cooled power plants may release heated water back into rivers and streams, harming wildlife. This must be carefully monitored to prevent species extinction. Due to the current administration’s policies, this must be watched closely because the administration is loaded with climate-change deniers.
Hydroelectric power
Hydropower requires the damming of rivers. The largest amounts of land are forced underwater. In some situations, wildlife moves out of the area. Fish that once traveled the waterways now are unable to move as easily. Entire populations of fish can be endangered in the hydroelectric process.
