Renewable energy and the earth

The dangers of global warming have become more obvious to almost everyone this year. This summer, global warming seems more real to the citizens of California, due to the massive wildfires affecting the state. Climate experts report that these fires are a direct result of global warming.  In addition, continued drought continues to plague several important regions of the earth. Climate patterns are changing across the planet. Since the mid 20th century, researchers have chronicled these climate changes and attributed them to human activity on the planet. The ignition of massive quantities of fossil fuels has resulted in dramatically increased levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In California, much of the state’s power continues to come from fossil fuels such as natural gas and oil. When fossil fuels are burned, carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases are emitted. Greenhouse gases, such as methane, are also released as part of fossil fuel production and transportation. Carbon dioxide isn’t harmful at natural levels, but too much of it can act like a layer of plastic wrap around the Earth that lets in heat from the sun but doesn’t allow it to escape. In that context, the atmosphere acts like a greenhouse, which is why these emissions are called greenhouse gases.

What is global warming doing to California?

In the future, climate scientists expect more frequent and longer heat waves, and drier summers. Smog forms faster in warmer weather, creating a significant hazard for all of us, especially infants, children and the elderly. Respiratory diseases are common, especially in urban areas where pollution is worst. Solutions can be found in renewable energy sources and they must be adopted as soon as possible. Solar is by far the least expensive and most efficient form of clean energy.

Keeping California golden for the foreseeable future

California remains the most geologically diverse state with oceans, deserts, forests, and the most farmland in America. Climate change is already contributing to increased air pollution, deforestation, ocean acidification, catastrophic wildfires, droughts, heat waves and sea-level rise, which immediately threaten our state and its future. Scientists and other experts agree that we must reduce carbon pollution if we are to avoid the terrible effects of global warming, and time is not on our side. Some of these scientists believe their initial predictions were much too optimistic. We all have to work together to make major changes to protect what we have today and preserve our natural resources for the future.

California leads the way to a clean energy future

So how do we achieve our environmental goals? It will take sacrifice from every Californian and company doing business in the state. We all need to play a part in increasing energy efficiency, using clean energy and supporting green technologies. If we achieve these goals, we’ll also enjoy the benefits of a less polluted future. Besides resisting the effects of climate change, our efforts can aid our local economy by keeping clean-energy investments, jobs, and innovation in California.
