Anatomy of a solar electric system

Let's begin a journey to electrical enlightenment with a quick overview of what goes into a home solar power system and look at specific components of the three main types of solar panel systems.

Then we will take a beautiful walk through the installation process from start to finish. Installing solar panels can be that easy because we give you a basic lesson and then it is time to get to work.

First, you need to make sure that a DIY installation is not only desirable legal in your area (it's not allowed everywhere). If you give yourself the green light, great. If not, you can use this book to learn the essentials of going solar and gain confidence in choosing what you want to go solar. You can do it yourself, or you can find a professional and then monitor what they do for a solar installation.

Anatomy of a solar-electric system

The science of turning sunlight directly into electricity is known as photovoltaics, referring to photons of lights and volts of electricity those photons cause. here is your lesson plan on how solar panels work. Solar modules contain solar cells which are most commonly made from layers of silicon, a semiconductor material made from sand.

When photons of light enter a solar cell, they get absorbed as excite electrons in the silicon layers, causing them to move and flow continuously through a circuit of wiring that feeds into the PV system. Harnessing that electrical flow is what gives the solar module electrical power.

Turn DC electricity into AC electricity

The power produced by solar panels is direct current in which all the electrons move in one direction only. Your home's electrical system and most appliances use alternating current power, in which the electrons move back and forth alternating direction about 60 times per second. Therefore solar panels systems need to have one or more inverters that convert the DC electricity into AC electricity that we can use and sell back to the utilities through the grid.
