Climate change is here and scientists are increasingly alarmed at the environmental changes, particularly in the Arctic. Even climate change deniers have to admit that we are experiencing a frightening fire season in California, widespread drought, and cataclysmic storms. Virtually everyone is aware of the role that pollution plays in the warming of our planet. Despite some persistent deniers, 97 percent of climate scientists recognize that man is the main cause of global warming. It seems like every month, there’s another environmental disaster making the headlines. Fortunately, there are dedicated scientists and environmental activists committed to taking a stand. All over the globe, grassroots activists, environmental lobbyists, non-profit lawyers, green economists, sustainability-minded engineers, and eco-conscious entrepreneurs are working to slow global warming and alleviate environmental crimes and omissions.
Especially in today’s political climate, individual citizens need to become more educated about the environment and what they can do to become more environmentally aware citizens. We must challenge our fellow citizens to support the climate activists by advocating for political change where necessary. For the past century and a half, corporations have used their wealth and power to control government officials and claim rights that should only belong to individual citizens. However, if individuals make the transition to clean energy sources, this serves as an example for the whole planet. While climate change deniers have long had an influence on our government, the current administration has bolstered their impact through:
Placing climate change deniers and former CEOs on corporate boards
Limiting the EPA and withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords,
Denouncing the media and declaring everything fake news, including the facts.
Some corporations are enormous polluters and will not be motivated by anything other than their bottom line. Corporations often claim the first amendment right to free speech. Because corporations are not actual people and therefore do not have a mouth to speak with, they hounded the courts until money was declared a form of protected speech, which made for unlimited corporate donations in elections. The resulting implications are disastrous as seen in Richmond, California where Chevron spent millions in a small, local election in an effort to ensure that its hand-picked candidate would hold office and support legislation favorable for its profitable operation. This can also be seen in the Trump administration’s tax plan that provides tax cuts for corporations and America’s wealthiest individuals. They promote policies like opening up the Arctic refuge for drilling, and this is supported by legislative officials receiving financial incentives from energy corporations and other big businesses. We must take action now to reverse the corporate foothold that puts profits before human beings and the planet. But most importantly, we need to adopt renewable energy sources like solar power before it’s too late.
