Solar is the cleanest energy source

The world is feeling progressively more of the effects of global warming. This summer a hurricane hit Hawaii for the first time in a quarter century. Japan has recorded the highest temperatures since records have been kept. Europe and Canada, two other northern hemisphere nations, are seeing the hottest temperatures in recent memory with many deaths attributable to the excess heat.  Climate change is motivating scientists and lawmakers to analyze how the world can produce power without more pollution to the planet. The clear answer, for now, is solar energy. A  large number of households are choosing to install solar panels on their home or business to help reduce their energy costs. Some of the key benefits of solar energy on the environment include:

Less water consumption

Especially in the western part of the United States, water is the most precious natural resource. We live in one of the driest continents on the planet, and we are in danger of running out of fresh water in the near future. Desalination facilities are not yet efficient enough to treat large quantities of ocean water.  Traditional electricity generation can use thousands of gallons of water each year. Water is used for cooling generators, processing and refining fuel and transporting fuel. Producing power through solar panels, however, uses no water at all. The operation of solar photovoltaic cells doesn’t require water to generate electricity, reducing the strain on this precious resource. The only water needed for solar panels is rainwater to naturally clean the panels when they get dirty. Generating energy through solar panels uses less water than traditional energy production.

Reducing air pollution through solar

Most people agree that the most important role solar plays in the world are to minimize air pollution. The air we breathe affects our health and well being. Generating electricity from fossil fuels can produce harmful carbon dioxide and methane gases that harm the quality of the air we breathe. Breathing poor quality air daily can have devastating negative consequences on our health. Air pollution has been linked to asthma and allergies, bronchitis, pneumonia, headaches, anxiety, heart attacks and some cancers.

Solar helps to slow climate change

The long-term burning of fossil fuels has led to the enhanced greenhouse effect, which is warming our earth faster than ever before. This has been linked to a number of deadly weather events, such as flooding, cyclones, extreme heat, and drought. Generating electricity from solar panels produces no greenhouse gases at all, and so can help to reduce the effect of climate change if used widely.  With solar energy powering a home or business, there is no burning of fuel and no emissions from energy generation.
