The dramatic increase in solar installations continues to be a bright spot in an otherwise frightening energy landscape. News stories proliferate about climate-related weather events that are responsible for hundreds of deaths and injuries. But there continues to be good news about solar energy, despite tariffs levied on solar panels from China. Solar prices are still holding relatively steady. Even though the president and his climate advisors deny climate change, that doesn’t mean the rest of the world has bought into this propaganda. In fact, solar power is happening all over the planet and it looks like that trend is likely to continue in perpetuity.
Much of the reason solar power has grown so much recently is falling prices. The average cost of solar energy in 2015 dropped 70 percent. In 2016, prices fell even further – nearly 20 percent – which helped increase the installations of solar power systems.
“Prices dropped to all-time lows, installations expanded in states across the country and job numbers soared,” Hopper said. “The bottom line is that more people are benefiting from solar now than at any point in the past, and while the market is changing, the broader trend over the next five years is going in one direction – and that’s up.”
The solar industry is employing around 260,000 Americans in well-paying jobs from coast to coast. Many states have reaped the benefits of solar power already. California’s transition to solar power shows how successful renewable energy is, helping the economy and creating more jobs. Solar energy also improves the economy in other ways. The American solar energy sector is generating more than $23 billion in direct investment and dramatically cutting air pollution. Other states that we wouldn’t normally associate with renewable energy, such as Georgia, Minnesota, South Carolina and Utah, saw unprecedented growth in solar PV installations in 2016. Although only nine states have one GW of operating solar PV today, by 2022 that number will increase to 24 states.
