Is solar the best energy option?

Half a century ago, we didn’t have many options when it came to generating electricity. There was coal, gas and some hydro. Solar power is nothing new. Though harnessing the wind for power has been around for hundreds of years, not a lot of people were using it. But fifty years ago, solar power was not a technology that was viable. Today electricity is produced using almost every toxic substance known to man from oil to uranium.

Fossil fuels have cause untold premature deaths

Coal, natural gas, and oil are all fossil fuels, which are the remains of living organisms. Fossil fuels are composed of hydrocarbons that when burned, transform into carbon dioxide. Every year the burning of fossil fuels releases billions of metric tons of carbon dioxide into the air, causing the planet to warm. The causes of global warming are intensely debated by the ignorant,  but there is undeniable proof that the earth is warming. Sea levels are rising, the ocean is acidifying, polar bears are losing their home, and California is in a long-term drought because of global warming. Most of the electricity produced in the United States still comes from fossil fuels. In recent years, utility companies are using less coal and more natural gas. This is because the United States has emerged as the biggest producer of natural gas and some proponents try to convince us natural gas is “clean.” Bullshit! Despite the decrease in natural gas prices, however, electricity costs have spiked across the United States, and prices are expected to continue climbing.

What makes solar the better energy alternative?

Solar is dramatically better than fossil fuels for many reasons. For one, photovoltaics do not produce carbon dioxide and therefore aren’t warming the planet and contributing to air and water pollution. Two, the price of solar has come down 60 percent in the last three years.  Three, solar is cheaper than fossil fuels. Finally, sunlight is found everywhere on earth.  Solar energy doesn’t cause massive destruction of land or the heavy and expensive labor of building a dam. Plus, solar energy is available everywhere and to everyone who can afford it. Solar, with its clean abundance as well as its decreasing costs and zero emissions, is by far the best energy choice we have, especially with costs for solar panels falling to within range of more homes and businesses.
